Choosing a tech skilling program: what actually predicts a hire

Duration and syllabus length say less than you'd think. Here's what to look for instead.

Most people choosing a training program compare the wrong things: syllabus length, number of modules, whether the certificate looks impressive. None of those predict whether you'll actually get hired.

What doesn't predict a hire

  • A long syllabus. More topics covered often means less depth on any one of them.
  • A fixed timeline. A 12-week program that moves the same pace for every learner works for some and fails others, depending on where they started.
  • Certificate design. Nobody hiring you will look past the first project you show them.

What actually predicts it

  • Whether the program adjusts to what you already know. Two people starting the same program with different backgrounds shouldn't finish at the same pace doing the same things — if they do, one of them was bored and the other was lost.
  • Whether you build something real, not just follow a tutorial. A finished project you can explain, defend, and extend in an interview outweighs a stack of completed exercises.
  • Whether someone is tracking outcomes, not just enrollments. A program that can tell you its placement rate, even an early one, is being honest about what it's for.

Why Vidyavan doesn't list durations

This is why our programs don't list a fixed duration: how fast you finish depends on what you bring in and how you use the time, not a calendar we set in advance. It's a harder thing to put in a brochure than "12 weeks," but it's the more honest answer.

If that's the kind of program you're looking for, see our current programs.
